FAQ

Common questions

Where should a complete beginner start with gold trading?

Start with the mechanics before the market view: what a lot is, what a pip is, and how margin works. In gold, one standard lot is 100 oz and one pip is 0.01, so the numbers are larger than they look. Read the how-to-trade page, then practise on a demo account until position sizing and stop placement feel routine rather than abstract.

How much money do I need to start trading gold from Kenya?

There is no single figure, because it depends on your lot size, your stop distance and the leverage cap that applies to the entity serving Kenya. As a reference, at the applicable cap a 0.10-lot gold position needs about $85.50 in margin, but margin is not your risk. Your real exposure is the stop distance times pip value, so fund an amount you can lose without changing your life.

Is a demo account enough before I trade with real money?

A demo account is enough to learn the platform and the arithmetic, but not enough to learn your own reactions. It trains order entry, stop placement and position sizing without money at stake, which is why we recommend it first. What it cannot train is the discomfort of a live loss or the discipline to leave a stop alone, so move to small live size only when the mechanics are automatic.

What is the difference between a pip and a point in gold, and why does it matter?

In XAU/USD a pip is 0.01 of a dollar per ounce, so a move from 4275.00 to 4276.00 is 100 pips. That matters because your risk per trade is pip distance times pip value times lots. On 0.10 lots each pip is about $0.10, so a 300-pip stop is roughly $30. Get this arithmetic right before you worry about entries.

Do I need a licence or an adviser to trade gold in Kenya?

No licence is required for you to trade your own account, but the firm you use matters. This desk is not a broker and does not give personal advice; it is a toolkit for learning and sizing. Check who regulates any broker you consider. FxPro, for example, is licensed by the FCA (UK), CySEC and FSCA — not by the CMA of Kenya, so local recourse is limited.
