Trading XAU/USD on the FxPro platform

Finding gold, sizing the order and setting the exit are one continuous decision, not three.

Finding XAU/USD in the terminal

Gold appears in the terminal as XAU/USD, and you find it by typing that code into the symbol search rather than scrolling a list. On MT4, MT5 and cTrader the search sits in the market watch panel; on the FxPro app it is the symbol field on the quotes screen. Type XAU, select the USD pair, and add it to your watchlist so it is one click away next session.

Check the contract specification before you place anything. One standard lot of XAU/USD is 100 ounces and one pip is 0.01, which is the number every calculation on this page depends on. A reference price near 4275.0 is useful for sanity-checking what you see on screen, but the price that matters is the one quoted when you click.

If XAU/USD does not appear in search, you are almost certainly on the wrong account type or the wrong server for the platform you downloaded. That is a client-area fix, not a terminal fix.

Sizing the order before you click

Size the position from the risk, not from the margin. Decide what a losing trade may cost you in shillings, then use our position size calculator to turn that into lots at your stop distance; the pip value calculator tells you what each 0.01 of gold is worth at that size so the two numbers agree. Working forwards from a lot size you like the look of is how accounts get oversized.

Then check the margin. Our margin calculator shows what the position requires at the applicable cap, and the worked figure for 0.10 lots of gold is about $85.50. That is the amount held aside, not the amount at risk — the stop distance and the pip value decide the risk, and they are a different and usually larger number.

Leverage is a cap, not a target. The cap that applies to the entity serving Kenya is the ceiling on what you may use, and using all of it leaves no room for the price to move against you before a margin call. Size to your stop, and let the margin figure be a check rather than an instruction.

Setting the exit with the entry

Place the stop loss and take profit in the same order ticket as the entry, before you confirm it. An entry without a stop is a position whose risk is decided by whoever is watching the screen at the worst moment, and gold moves fast enough that the moment arrives. The stop goes where your reason for the trade is wrong, not at a round number that feels comfortable.

Set the take profit at the level where your analysis says the move is done, and check the reward against the risk before confirming. Our profit calculator converts the distance to that target into shillings at your size, so you can see whether the trade is worth taking rather than hoping it is.

After the order is live, leave the exits alone unless the reason you set them has changed. Widening a stop to avoid being taken out converts a planned loss into an unplanned one, and it is the single most common way a well-sized gold trade becomes a bad one.

Why the gold symbol list may show more than one XAU/USD entry and which to open

Several XAU/USD entries can appear because brokers list gold under more than one contract label, and the one you open must match the platform and account type you are actually trading. On FxPro's MT4, MT5, cTrader and app, the symbol tree can show a spot gold pair plus variants tied to the account; pick the entry that names XAU/USD and the account currency you funded. If two entries look identical, the contract specification panel is the tie-breaker, not the name alone.

The symbol you open should be the one whose specification panel shows a contract size of 100 oz per lot, because that is the definition of a standard lot of gold. Open the specification window before you trade and read the contract size, the tick size and the margin currency. If a gold entry shows a different contract size, it is a different instrument and every position-size and pip calculation you do will be wrong for it. The correct entry is the one that matches 100 oz and a pip of 0.01.

Symbol names can differ between MT4, MT5, cTrader and the FxPro app even when the underlying instrument is the same, so do not assume an entry you used on one platform carries the same label on another. Search the symbol list for XAU and confirm the specification each time you change platform or account. The cost of choosing the wrong entry is not a hidden fee; it is a position whose size and pip value no longer match your plan, which is a risk problem before it is a money problem.

What one lot of XAU/USD actually represents in ounces and in shillings of exposure

One standard lot of XAU/USD is 100 troy ounces of gold, so the position's exposure is the gold price multiplied by 100. At the reference price of 4275.0, one lot represents about $427,500 of notional gold. That notional is why gold positions are sized in fractions of a lot: a 0.10-lot position is 10 oz, and a 0.01-lot position is 1 oz. The contract size is fixed; what changes is how much of it you open.

The pip value of gold follows from the contract size: one pip is 0.01, so a 1.00-lot position moves $1 per pip, a 0.10-lot position moves $0.10 per pip, and a 0.01-lot position moves $0.01 per pip. In shilling terms, that pip value converts at the USD/KES rate your account or card applies, so the KSh figure depends on the exchange rate at the time rather than on a fixed number. Size the position from the pip value you can tolerate, not from the lot list.

The margin a lot requires is separate from its notional value and depends on the leverage cap that applies to the FxPro entity serving Kenya. At that cap, a 0.10-lot gold position needs about $85.50 margin, which shows how leverage reduces the cash tied up without reducing the exposure. Margin is not a cost and not a limit on loss; it is the collateral the broker holds. The loss on a 100 oz lot still runs at $1 per pip against your balance.

Attaching the stop-loss in the order ticket so it exists before the fill

Set the stop-loss in the order ticket itself, before you submit, so the position cannot exist without a defined exit. On MT4, MT5, cTrader and the FxPro app the ticket has a stop-loss field next to the entry price; fill it in and submit once. That way the stop is attached at the moment of the fill rather than left for a second step you might skip. The field accepts a price, so decide the price from your risk, not from the distance the platform suggests.

The stop price should be derived from the amount you are willing to lose and the pip value of the lot size, not from a round number on the chart. For a 0.10-lot gold position, each pip is $0.10, so a stop 100 pips away risks about $10 before costs; for a 1.00-lot position the same 100-pip stop risks about $100. Work the stop distance out first, then enter the price, then check that the ticket's calculated risk matches what you intended before you click.

A stop entered in the ticket is visible in the terminal immediately after the fill, and you should confirm it is there and at the price you set rather than assume the platform accepted it. Some order types and some market conditions can reject a stop that is too close to the entry, so the confirmation step is not optional. If the stop is missing or wrong, fix it before doing anything else. The point of the ticket field is that the exit exists from the first second of the trade.

Reading the swap line on a gold position you keep past the daily rollover

The swap line on an open XAU/USD position is the overnight financing adjustment the broker applies when the position is held past the daily rollover, and it can be a credit or a debit depending on the direction of the trade and the rates involved. It is not a commission on the trade; it is a carrying cost or credit that appears as a separate line in the terminal. The amount depends on the broker's financing rates, the position size and the number of nights held, so it is not a fixed figure you can memorise.

For gold, the swap is calculated on the notional value of the position, so a larger lot size produces a larger swap line in money terms even if the rate is unchanged. A 0.10-lot position carries one-tenth the swap of a 1.00-lot position at the same rate. Because the rate itself depends on prevailing interest rates and the broker's terms, the only reliable way to see the current figure is the swap section of the instrument specification in the platform, not a number quoted elsewhere.

Holding a gold position overnight means the swap line accrues each rollover, and over many nights it can become a material part of the trade's result, especially on a position that is not moving in your favour. Check the swap long and swap short figures in the specification before you decide to hold, and treat an expected multi-night hold as a position with an extra running cost to be weighed against the move you expect. The swap is separate from the spread and from any commission, and it is charged whether or not the trade is profitable.

Checking the ticket against the specification before the order goes live

The final check before submitting a gold order is to compare the ticket's fields with the instrument specification: contract size 100 oz, pip 0.01, lot size you intended, stop-loss price you calculated and the margin the platform will hold. If any of those differ from your plan, stop and correct it before submitting. This check takes seconds and catches the common errors, which are the wrong lot size and a stop entered as a distance rather than a price. The specification is the reference; the ticket is what you are about to commit.

Margin shown on the ticket depends on the leverage cap that applies to the FxPro entity serving Kenya, and it is a cap rather than a target. At that cap, a 0.10-lot gold position needs about $85.50 margin, so a ticket showing a very different figure for that size means either the lot size or the symbol is not what you think. Margin is held, not spent, but it must be available in the account before the order can be accepted. Fund through M-Pesa and allow for the balance to show before trading.

The regulator caveat belongs in this check because it defines what recourse you have: FxPro is licensed by the FCA (UK), CySEC and FSCA, not by the CMA of Kenya. That does not change the ticket mechanics, but it does mean the entity serving you and its terms are the ones that govern the position. Confirm the account type and entity on the ticket, then submit. The order is live only after you click, and the stop you entered travels with it.

What the platform does not tell you about gold risk when the market gaps

A stop-loss on XAU/USD is an instruction to close at the next available price once the level is reached, not a guarantee of that price, so a gap through the stop can fill at a worse level. Gold can gap over weekends and around major announcements, and the platform will show the executed price, not the requested one. This is why the stop price and the risk per pip should be set with room for slippage rather than assuming the stop is a hard floor on the loss.

The leverage cap limits how much margin is held, not how much can be lost, and a gold position can lose more than the margin behind it if the market moves far enough against you. A 1.00-lot position moves $100 per pip, so a 100-pip adverse move is about $10,000 before costs, regardless of the margin that was required. Size from the loss you can absorb, not from the margin the platform shows, because the margin figure is the smallest number on the ticket and the least informative about risk.

The costs that sit around the trade are the spread, any commission, the swap on overnight holds and the conversion into KSh, and each depends on the broker's terms and the market at the time rather than on a figure you can fix in advance. The platform shows the current spread and the swap in the specification, and the conversion depends on the rate applied to your funding. Read those before the trade, not after, so the result you are judging is the result after costs.

FAQ

Common questions

How do I find XAU/USD in the terminal?

Open the symbol or market watch list and search XAU/USD, because gold is quoted as the code XAU against the US dollar and sits under metals rather than forex majors on most platforms. On MT4, MT5, cTrader and FxPro Edge the search box accepts the code directly, so type it rather than scrolling.

What does one pip mean on gold and what is it worth?

One pip on XAU/USD is 0.01, and one standard lot is 100 oz, so a 0.01 move is $1 per standard lot. Your actual pip value in shillings depends on the lot size and the KSh conversion at the time, so run the pip value calculator rather than assuming a fixed figure.

How do I size my first gold order without guessing?

Size from your stop distance and the money you are willing to lose, not from the maximum lot the platform allows. Enter the stop in dollars, your account balance and your risk into the position size calculator, and it returns the lot size; then confirm the margin with the margin calculator before you click buy or sell.

Why does my gold order ticket show a different margin from my calculation?

It differs because the ticket uses the leverage cap that applies to the entity serving Kenya and the exact price at that moment, while your calculation may have used an older price or a different lot size. At the applicable cap, a 0.10-lot gold position needs about $85.50 margin; recheck the ticket against the margin calculator.

Should I place a stop loss and take profit on the first order?

Yes, set both on the order ticket, because gold moves in large dollar swings and an unhedged first position is where most new accounts fail. Place the stop at a level your risk plan supports, then use the profit calculator to see what the take profit returns in dollars and shillings before you confirm.
